Wheatstone Bridge:

The Wheatstone Bridge is an electrical circuit used to measure an unknown electrical resistance by balancing two legs of a bridge circuit. One of these legs includes the unknown component (the resistor we want to measure). Here are the key points about the Wheatstone Bridge:

  • Components:
    • Rx: The fixed, yet unknown, resistance to be measured.
    • R1R2, and R3: Resistors of known resistance.
    • R2: Adjustable resistor.
  • Balancing:
    • Adjust R2 until the bridge is “balanced,” meaning no current flows through the galvanometer (Vg).
    • At balance, the potential difference between the midpoints (B and D) is zero.
    • The ratio of resistances in the known leg (R2 / R1) equals the ratio of resistances in the unknown leg (Rx / R3).
  • Precision:
    • Detecting zero current with a galvanometer can be done with high precision.
    • If R1R2, and R3 are known precisely, we can measure Rx accurately.
  • Applications:
    • Originally used for soil analysis and comparison.
    • Used in strain gauge and resistance thermometer measurements.
