What is Pigweed?

Pigweed is a weed classified under the species Amaranthus. It’s a legitimate four-letter word for lawn and garden enthusiasts.
There are different types of pigweed, but we’ll focus on one called prostrate pigweed (Amaranthus blitoides).
Prostrate pigweed acts like a perennial, completing its life cycle in one growing season but coming back year after year due to its ability to produce and disseminate over 100,000 small black seeds that can remain dormant in the soil for up to 20 years.
The plant has alternate, pale-to-shiny dark-green leaves that are oblong to egg-shaped. Its light green to reddish stems hug the ground, forming thick circular mats when mature.
