1. Asexual Reproduction:

   • In single-celled organisms (such as amoebas), mitosis is the primary method of reproduction. During mitosis, a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells, ensuring the continuity of the species.
   • Within complex organisms (like humans), mitosis is responsible for creating new cells. For instance, it generates skin cells, blood cells, and other essential components.
   • The five distinct phases of mitosis are prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. These phases orchestrate the orderly division of genetic material and the formation of two identical cells.

2. Growth:

   • As plants and animals age, they typically increase in size. Mitosis plays a critical role in this growth process.
   • By creating additional cells, mitosis contributes to adding mass to the body. For instance, it generates new blood cells to support overall growth.
   • However, not all cells in the human body undergo mitosis. Nerve cells and muscle cells do not replicate through mitosis once the necessary number has been reached.

3. Tissue Repair:

   • When an organism sustains an injury, mitosis becomes essential for replacing damaged cells.
   • Skin cells and blood vessels, which protect and oxygenate muscles and organs, rely on mitosis for repair.
   • In some organisms (like lizards), mitosis can even regenerate entire lost limbs, such as tails or legs.

4. Errors in Mitosis:

   • While mitosis is crucial for cell repair and growth, errors during this process can have serious consequences.
   • One significant complication is cancer, where mutations in DNA during mitosis can lead to the development of cancerous cells.
   • Additionally, mitosis errors during fetal development can result in chromosomal disorders like Down syndrome and Turner syndrome.
