Composition and Colors:
- Litmus paper is made from filter paper treated with a natural water-soluble dye obtained from lichens.
- There are two common types of litmus paper:
  - Blue litmus paper: It turns red under acidic conditions (pH below 4.5).
  - Red litmus paper: It turns blue under alkaline conditions (pH above 8.3).
History:
- Around 1300, the Spanish physician Arnaldus de Villa Nova first used litmus.
- The blue dye was extracted from lichens, especially in the Netherlands, from the 16th century onwards.
- Wood cellulose, lichens, and other compounds are used to produce litmus paper.
Using Litmus Paper:
- Litmus paper can indicate whether a solution is acidic or basic.
- To perform a simple litmus paper test:
  - Tear each piece of litmus paper into smaller parts.
  - Take a small piece of red litmus paper and fold it in half. Dip it into the substance you want to test.
  - Repeat the procedure with a small piece of blue litmus paper.
  - Observe the color changes:
    - If the blue litmus paper turns red, the material is acidic.
    - If the red litmus paper turns blue, the material is alkaline.
    - If neither paper changes color, the material is neutral.
