  1. Composition and Colors:

    • Litmus paper is made from filter paper treated with a natural water-soluble dye obtained from lichens.
    • There are two common types of litmus paper:
      • Blue litmus paper: It turns red under acidic conditions (pH below 4.5).
      • Red litmus paper: It turns blue under alkaline conditions (pH above 8.3).
  2. History:

    • Around 1300, the Spanish physician Arnaldus de Villa Nova first used litmus.
    • The blue dye was extracted from lichens, especially in the Netherlands, from the 16th century onwards.
    • Wood cellulose, lichens, and other compounds are used to produce litmus paper.
  3. Using Litmus Paper:

    • Litmus paper can indicate whether a solution is acidic or basic.
    • To perform a simple litmus paper test:
      • Tear each piece of litmus paper into smaller parts.
      • Take a small piece of red litmus paper and fold it in half. Dip it into the substance you want to test.
      • Repeat the procedure with a small piece of blue litmus paper.
      • Observe the color changes:
        • If the blue litmus paper turns red, the material is acidic.
        • If the red litmus paper turns blue, the material is alkaline.
        • If neither paper changes color, the material is neutral.
